LaFaveFarm is a learning exercise in profitably and sustainably growing food crops in Central Arkansas. As such it currently consists of small, but growing plots of crops. The term “sustainably” is used because it is the best single term to describe all of the crop choices and cultivation practices on the farm.

At LaFaveFarm the goal of sustainability is being implemented by using as few off-farm inputs as possible. In cases where this is not practical for any any crop then these inputs are minimized and priority given to inputs that themselves come from sustainable sources. Organic farming practices are also used as a guide because the goals of organic farming and goals of sustainable farming are closely aligned.
The layout of the farm is shown in the satellite photo below as the “inverted boot” shape wrapping around the much cleaner pastures to it’s left. It extends from the highway (top of the boot) to the river (sole of the boot). It offers a lot of diversity to work with. It has multiple water features, the river plus a slough, and both a wet weather and an all weather stream. It is almost all prone to flooding. The exceptions being a couple of small isolated areas and places where berms were built for structures or other uses in years past.
